Nha Trang

SATURDAY 30 JULY 2011

We arrived in Nha Trang 6 a.m. and I went to my hotel where I had breakfast and managed to get into my room by 8.00 a.m. After freshening up, I cycled to see the Long Son Pagoda, with its bronze Buddha where a Buddhist ceremony was beginning, which was interesting to watch. I then went to see the big white Buddha behind the Pagoda. The statue is 24 metres high and was made in 1964 to pray for peace and as a symbol of the Buddhist struggle against the repressive Diem regime.

I then cycled to the other end of Nha Trang to book my ticket to Saigon for the next night. All the night buses were full, so I ended up with one of the last tickets on the slow night train, in a 6 berth hard sleeper. I then spent the afternoon at the Louisiane Brewhouse restaurant right by the beach, which also has a swimming pool where I hired a lounger for the rest of the day. The sea water was a lovely temperature and was cool enough to be refreshing.
